Power of Nature: A Step Towards Health and Wellbeing at Deearness Railway Path 15th July 2023
Imagine a serene landscape where lush trees sway with the wind, where the chirping of birds is your soundtrack, and each step forward ushers you deeper into tranquillity. Welcome to the captivating world of walking in nature at Deerness Railway Path; an 8.5 mile route on a former railway line from Broompark Picnic Site, just outside Durham City to Crook, running past Ushaw Moor, Deerness View and Stanley. We conduct these early morning weekend walks as we believe it to be beneficial for the body, mind, and soul. This seemingly simple activity carries immense potential to transform our health and wellbeing. Stepping out into the great outdoors isn't just a feast for your senses, it's a nourishing meal for your overall wellness.
Walking in nature, often referred to as 'forest bathing' or 'eco-therapy,' offers a myriad of health benefits. It's been scientifically proven to lower heart rate and blood pressure, reduce stress hormone production, boost the immune system, and improve overall feelings of wellbeing. The natural beauty and quietness have a restorative effect on our mental health, helping to reduce anxiety and depression. The changing scenery and uneven terrain also challenge our bodies in different ways than a typical treadmill workout, improving our balance and coordination.
Moreover, spending time in nature helps to foster mindfulness. As we walk, we become more attuned to our surroundings - the rustling of leaves, the whispering wind, the trickling water - grounding us in the present moment. This mindfulness helps to clear our minds, decrease stress, and increase focus and creativity. As we step into nature, we are not merely walking; we are embarking on a journey of self-discovery and self-healing. So, lace up your shoes, step out the door, and stride your way to better health and wellbeing.
